DESCRIPTION:Training video and materials now available. \nVideo HERE. \nMaterials HERE. \nParents with intellectual and developmental disabilities are frequently subject to inadequate parenting capacity evaluations\, causing many to lose their parental rights unnecessarily. This presentation will illuminate the shortcomings of these evaluations and provide an overview of an alternative methodology used to evaluate parents fairly while offering realistic and relevant recommendations that provide parents equal opportunity to parent. \nDr. Nicole Brisson is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and has worked in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1992. She holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Psychology and a specialization in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Brisson is the founder and director of SAGE Institute for Adaptive Parenting (formerly Sage Haven Associates\, Inc.)\, an organization dedicated to advancing rights\, equity\, and education for parents with disabilities. Dr. Brisson has been recognized as a national expert in providing competence-based parenting assessments to parents with intellectual disabilities by the United States Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services\, and her work has been referenced in the National Council on Disabilities’ report “Rocking the Cradle: Ensuring the Rights of Parents with Disabilities.” Dr. Brisson is the creator of the SAGE Family Assessment Model\, an innovative practice model used to evaluate parents with disabilities\, and developed and taught a course on parental disability and child welfare at the University of Vermont. She has conducted trainings\, spoken at conferences\, and testified in courts across the United States. Dr. Brisson served as the Education Committee Chair and the Vice President of The Association for Successful Parenting (TASP). It takes a special kind of chutzpah to make the case for more taxpayer money based on your own failure. It’s the same kind of chutzpah that demonizes young children with fearmongering tripe about homicidal 6-year-olds (or sometimes it’s 5-year-olds) who supposedly will be rampaging through Colorado unless they’re institutionalized. Yet that’s the snake oil Colorado’s residential treatment industry has been selling. Unfortunately\, a lot of politicians and media have been buying it – Colorado institutionalizes children at a rate 33%above the national average. With some help from the “Father of Wraparound” (on video)\, this presentation will discuss how to counter the residential treatment industry – and why it’s important even if you don’t have any clients whose children are institutionalized. \nPresenter by Richard Wexler\, Executive Director of the National Coalition for Child Protection Reform. According to the trade journal Youth Today\, Richard Wexler “might be the most successful youth advocate out there in terms of landing his words on editorial pages around the country.” Wexler’s interest in child welfare grew out of 19 years of work as a reporter for newspapers\, public radio and public television. During that time\, he won more than two dozen awards\, many of them for stories about child abuse and foster care. He is the author of Wounded Innocents: The Real Victims of the War Against Child Abuse (Prometheus Books: 1990\, 1995). Wexler has testified before Congress and State Legislatures in Colorado and other states\, advised the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Children and Families in its 1995 rewrite of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act\, and served on the Philadelphia City Council Special Committee on Child Separations. Wexler’s writing about the family policing system has appeared in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, the Los Angeles Times\, the Chicago Tribune and other major newspapers\, and he has been interviewed by The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, the Los Angeles Times\, Time\, the Associated Press\, USA Today\, 60Minutes\, NPR\, CNN\, Good Morning America\, Today\, CBS This Morning\, ABC World News Tonight\, the CBS Evening News\, and other media. Wexler is a graduate of Richmond College of the City University of New York and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism\, where he was awarded the school’s highest honor\, a Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship.
